My Italian sojourn took advantage of the accommodating guidance and transport provided by ‘The Other Side of Venice – Veneto Tours,’ with Miriam at the helm. We departed Venice early one morning for a day trip to the beautiful countryside of the Veneto, southwest of Padova. The destination: a dream-like Baroque masterpiece, VALSANZIBIO, with a magnificent landscape that can be traced back to 1669 and the Venetian aristocrat, Zuane Francesco Barbarigo – the breathtaking layout created by none other than the Vatican architect, Bernini.

In 1988 the multimedia artist André Heller became owner of the villa property, “protector and ally” in Heller’s words. Today, Fondazione André Heller oversees the lush gardens, boasting art installations and elements of surprise at every turn.

The Magic of Venice: The Tour Begins

Cruising by on a vaporetto, sights such as a palazzo’s lavishly adorned facade could make me catch my breath despite being surrounded by activity. And no, I wasn’t tempted to take part in an overpriced gondola ride. Except, that is, when crossing the Few destinations boast the magical atmosphere of Venice. Grand Canal on a gondola traghetto ferry. For E. ,50 – half a Euro. It’s a cool way to be shuttled across, feeling one with the saavvy Venetians who employ this mode of transport as a shortcut. In upcoming features I’ll be touring the great gardens and villas of the Veneto region, the beguiling towns of Lago di Garda, travel tips, and more.
