and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 22-acre island, part of the National Park Services Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is the GGNRA’s most visited site, with some 1.3 million annual visitors hopping a ferry ride from San Francisco to see Alcatraz first-hand.

I had no idea there were such lovely gardens there. I admit to being one of those terrible locals who has actually never set foot on Alcatraz. I’ve always taken it for granted. I lived in the East Bay for years, used to work in downtown SF, I’ve even sailed around the island. Just never set foot on it. I’m really going to have to remedy that. Thanks for such an inspiring post!

Alice, I was there in the late 80’s and the grounds looked NOTHING like this! What a drastic, lovely change!
